Making Poems into Stories on a Snowy Day

The Snowy DaySaturday, March 2 from 10-12 noon

We have some exciting news at the Morrill Memorial Library. We have received a grant from the Ezra Jack Keats Foundation to present an INTERGENERATIONAL program in honor of the legendary children’s author. Poetry and children’s stories have weaved a long history together. Making Poems into Stories on a Snowy Day will take place Saturday, March 2nd from 10-12 noon. With the help of beloved author/illustrator Nancy Poydar (First Day Hooray, Zip, Zip Homework, and Fish School) and author Nancy Tupper Ling (My Sister, Alicia May, Character, and Coming Unfrozen), participants will create a storyboard from a poem.

Each participant should bring a poem that is 16 lines or longer. The poem may be the participant’s own creation or that of a favorite author. The poem should be a narrative one—a poem that tells a story. We will read picture books by Ezra Jack Keats and other authors to discover how poems and picture books relate. Participants will learn about line breaks and where words fall best on the page. Then we will map out our poem-story onto a story board. Finally, we will transfer our stories into hardcover blank books, adding illustrations to enhance the story. As Ezra Jack Keats knew well, in the silence of a snowy day, creations come alive.

To sign up, please contact the Information or Reference Desk at the library, 781-769-0200, x110 or x222.
