Influenza and Inequality – A Book Talk

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2010 – 7:30 PM
Patricia Fanning, Norwood native, historian, library trustee and associate professor of sociology at Bridgewater State University, will talk about her latest book, which offers a dramatic account of the deadly spread of influenza through Norwood, MA.

One of the worst medical disasters in human history, the influenza epidemic of 1918 claimed nearly 30 million lives worldwide in less than a year, including more than 500,000 in the United States. In this book, Dr. Fanning examines the sociological, psychological and political dimensions of the epidemic and brings to life this terrible period of history by tracing its path through the town of Norwood.

Professor Fanning is the author of several books, including “Through an Uncommon Lens: the Life and Photography of F. Holland Day”. Autographed copies of her new book will be available for purchase after the presentation. Please sign up at the library information desk or call 781-769-0200 x 222. The library is accessible to people with disabilities.
