In partnership with Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts, the Morrill Memorial Library offers adult learners free and confidential instruction to improve their reading, writing and conversational English skills. We also help learners prepare for their HiSET/GED and Citizenship tests.

Fun Halloween Hunt Facts:

  • Our literacy program is one of twelve affiliates of Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts (LVM)
  • Although our student-centered instruction has no set curriculum, the literacy program houses a collection of about 1,000 books and other materials!

Becoming a student:

  • Potential students should contact the Literacy office to schedule an appointment to fill out the application, after which they will be placed on our waiting list.

ALERT: In 2025, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) implemented a revised version of the civics test for naturalization.

Becoming a volunteer tutor:

Volunteer tutors must meet the following requirements:

  • Sensitivity to the needs of adult learners
  • High school diploma, or equivalent
  • Attend an Orientation and our 18-Hour training session (provided)
  • Time commitment: 2 hours per week for one year

Volunteer tutors do not need:

  • Foreign language skills
  • Prior teaching experience
